This is the second painting refering the the Jimmy Eat World song "Chase This Light". Here are its progress shots as well. It is almost finished. I just need to do some final touches and then it is done. It is 60cm X 50cm.

This little guy is a study for another painting I am doing. I got the inspiration from a Jimmy Eat World song "Chase this light". "Confetti Rainfall" is some lyrics in the song that I liked and this is what came from it. It is 24cm x 30cm.

Two Little Green Birds

I finished "Two Little Green Birds" today. I have been working on this one for a while. I am happy with the finished product. I have enjoyed trying new things and just letting go. It is both house paint and acrylic paint. It is 90 x 122 cm.

It has been ages since I have posted anything. In the last month we have moved so my art stuff was packed up and since we have settled in it has taken me ages to get back into the creative process. But over the last 2 weeks or so this is what I have been working on. I Finished it today. I am so happy with the out come. It is mixed media, oil paint, acrylic and house paint. I had fun making stencils and playing with multiple layers. It is unnamed at this stage.

Today I started a painting on one of my new big canvases. The size of the canvas is 91.4 x 121.9 cm. What I am basically wanting this painting to be like a fantasy city in the sky. Bubble gum like pastel bright colours. A happy image. It is fun working on a large canvas. So much room to work in.

Thursday 30th July City Trip

I caught a train into the city and had lunch with Mitch and then I headed over to South Bank. I took many Photos and only did a few sketches. I wanted to do more but I have had a sore neck and I was having trouble looking up and down. Anyway I am going to do some sketches from the photos I took. I have many ideas. Yay! It was a great day. I always enjoy South bank. Looking over the river to the city. Here are some of the pictures I took and one of the sketches I did. Click on the image to see the photos bigger.

This week I have been working on a painting for Sam for her birthday. (a bit late) I wanted to paint something that I know Sam loves and that is the beach. So I googled a image of Mooloolaba beach. See below.

I did a sketch on paper first, just to get a idea of what I was doing.

The canvas is 91 x 61 cm. Below are some process Pics.

This is the finished product. I hope she likes it. It was a different process for me. feels different to what I usually do. But I am happy with how it turned out. I enjoyed painting it.

City Plan and New Canvases :)

Since my main concept is the city and I don't feel that I want to make up a city I am going to spend a day in the city (Brisbane) and draw as many different buildings from as many different angles as I can. Also drawing other things that I see for eg People. And I will also take photos. This will give me fresh and new images to work from. I am looking forward to it.

On Friday I was in the City and I found this shop that had Canvases for half price. This gave me the opportunity to buy bigger canvases than I normally buy to experiment on. I like working big, it is hard to do so due to cost. So I am quiet excited about starting them. :)

This is what I have been doing today.
I have not done much on this one at all. I need to think about it. I want it to be kinda like the one below. But I am trying to use a different colour pallet. More earth tones I think.

This is the one I was working on Yesterday. I Think it is close to being finished. I need to think about it. I am thinking I want to lighten it up with some Ivory and cream colours. I might use those colours for the detail. It is a bit different to what I usually do. I am enjoying the process.

This is the new canvas I am working on at the moment. This is what I have been working on today. It is far from finished. I want it to be really layered and textured. At the moment it is very blueish. I am going to add a lot more grey, purple and and a bit of red. I want it to have a limited pallet.

Turning point

Today feels like a turning point for me. I have gone back to thinking about art the same way I did at Tafe. It has helped me creatively. Cause lately I have felt stuck.

These are some pages from my visual diary. Looking back at my old visual diaries from tafe it inspired me to go back to a concept I have done many times and I feel I can keep exploring. Brisbane City. This fist image is just a sketch I have done of buildings. I have kinda gone back to the start and have been reading up on perspective. This is one of the many sketches I have done.

Here are three of the Boxes I have been working on this week. They open and they close. They do have latches I just need to put them back on. This is the new project I mentioned in the last post :)

These are some of the paintings I have used in the boxes. It has been a challenge. Totally different than painting on a canvas. A great challenge that I want to develop further. I have used Ink and Acrylic paint on paper and then collage it onto the boxes.

It is what I will be working on this week. Also this week is Finishing my Folio (so I can approach Galleries), Visiting, researching and contacting other markets. :) Lots to do.

Today was a crazy busy day. I have done so much. The lovely Naybubble drove me to The Artshed. Yay where I brought some more canvases. And I also started 5 new works, so that means I am working on 10 at the moment. 4 of those 10 are so close to being finished. I finished only 1 today (check it out in the post titled "Aqua (We built this City) finished". I also took some photos of all the works finished and in progress together in one shot, so you can see what they look like together. And also a shot of my studio.

Bill Hammond

I discovered the artist Bill Hammond one day with Mitch, we saw him on a show on the ABC on Sunday afternoon. We then saw one of his art works "The Fall of Icarus" at the Art Gallery in Christchurch (Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu) when we were there in April. It is a very large work (200.5 X 216.5 cm). It was amazing. I wanted to buy it. hehe. It was hard to walk away from. This is it below.

His works are very different to what I have liked in the past. I like the way he works with paint. The drips are similar to what I often do. And his use of colour is great.

William (Bill) Hammond (born Christchurch, 1947) is a New Zealand artist.

Hammond attended the School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury from 1966 to 1969, and has worked as a full-time painter since 1981 (in between times working as a toymaker). His paintings feature two common themes - reference to popular music (often in the form of the liberal use of quoted lyrics within the structure of the paintings), and gaunt creatures with avian heads and human limbs. Hammond's canvases make liberal use of the flow of paint, with rivulets of colours running vertically down the backgrounds. These dark canvases, coupled with the anthropomorphic bird forms, have led to comparisons with the likes of Hieronymus Bosch.

This one reminds me of a rainbow PaddlePop... The colour is a bit off with this photo.. The plan I have for this one is to use the shapes in the pictures of the soap bubbles from an older post titled sketches, development, ideas. 74 X 60 cm

I thought of this one on the plane.. But my thoughts have changed on it... I am liking the colours. Bright and Happy. I started it yesturday.

It is turning into a stormy landscape, not what I planned hehe... on the right is the storm and it is clear weather on the left. I need it to dry a bit before I can do more.

Getting back to nature....

Today I went into the garden and was inspired..
I have had a little trouble figuring out what I want to paint lately over my yellow, blue and now a green artworks.

This one is kinda random but I like how it is developing. The tap came from when I did sketches in the garden.

Mitch gave me the idea to add the drawing men. I wanted to have something coming out of the tap. I look at the figures and see many emotions, even though they don't have faces or expression. The emotions change every time I look at it. I kinda guess it is a reflection of how I am feeling at the time. So it is a tap of emotions that you can not turn off.. hehe

This one is my favourite at the moment... I would have to say it is 95% finished.. hehe.. There is no real concept within this one, just that you can see what the eye is looking at. To me it is a city scape.. but it is abstract so it can be whatever you want it to be.

This piece is an experiment of concept and style... It is not yet finished. Almost, I think. It is about being under pressure and having the weight of the world on your shoulders or in this case your whole body. The pressures can take over and you can get lost within them.

So It took me a while to paint again after tafe. But I did finally start. I feel I am painting differently. I like it. I feel that I am more free with what i wanna do. I guess it is because I am not being assessed. So here is one of the first paintings that I have finished. I did it for Peta and her new unit. Also are some detail shots as well so you can see the brush stokes. I think it has a great texture.

I am pleased with the finished product. I titled the series "The City's Worm train". This is because when I look at it as a whole, the train to me has a life like presence of a worm weaving its way up and down the city.

Each Canvas also has a title. For example the first canvas has the title of "First carriage" and the second canvas titled "second carriage" etc.

I decided to bring all the canvas's together by painting under the train all the same green. I wanted it to become more like one art work, not split in two as it was when it was half yellow and half green.

I also decided to not include the un-framed canvas. I felt that it didn't look together as one art work. And I wanted to continue on with my original plan of the canvas's to be seen as city buildings. I wanted the city to look compact and busy. I felt that the un-framed canvas lost this.

These were originally created to be stitched or glued onto the canvas's. This was to give the artwork a collage look and to add more layers.

I decided to not use them in this way because it looked so great on it's own. They are a artwork in themselves.

The Next three..... (Progress Pics)

Here are some pictures of the progress of the second lot of three. The process was much similar to that of the first three.
I felt that the colours in the second three were a lot brighter than the first three.

The choice in colours I chose to use are generally a reflection of the moods I was feeling when I painted. So the grey like colours are when I was feeling tired or grumpy and the brightness is when I am feeling happy or excited. Which is most of the time. So this is probably why the art works are so bright.

Here are some progress pictures of the different stages that it too to get to the finished product.

I started with just blocking out the basic shapes with a acrylic wash of colours in the places I roughly wanted it to be.

I then added some spray paint to the train and the sky.

I added more more blocks of colour and added more detail in the train to neaten and tighten it up.

I decided to add the pale yellow under the train to add another element to the image. I also added more buildings that varied in sizes.

More detail was added to the windows and different shades of colour was added to give solidness to the buildings. There was also more detail added to the train using acrylic and a black marker.

I added more layers to the orange background on the bottom of the canvas's. I did this using oil paint. I then also added oil paint to most of the rest of the canvas to brighten the colours and add more detail.

Theme : City Buildings, looking at the Structure, shapes, sizes and the forms that the buildings create.

Subject Matter: City scene with a train connecting people all together. Each canvas is a different section of the city or a building. Each Canvas will have different colour themes representing different seasons, moods and emotions. The train will change as it enters each canvas (section).

Influences: Katharina Grosse, Carole Benzaken, Wassily Kandinsky.

First layers of part of the train.

This is a Lino cut of a city I cut in my printmaking class. This will be on top of the train throughout the art works. I am going to do another lino so the same design doesn't repeat so much.

Here are some pics from my visual diary about my concept for produce artwork.

The concept is a further development of some similar works I have done based on the subject matter of Brisbane city. I started playing with the images I have taken of the city old and new and I cut them out. Overlapping the images to create a new images. The viewpoints and perspective change and i started getting some surreal images. The new images I have created are going to be my major starting point for my paintings. I want to work with mixed media, Lino cuts, acrylic, ink, etc.

I am liking how they are turning out. Thinking i may be able to use them in my produce artwork project.

# Katharina Grosse and Wassily Kandinsky

Katharina Grosse is a artist that has inspired me to play with Spray paint. I like the way you are not sure how it will turn out. but I also like the control you can have over it too. I like the way she works with colour and the way she uses buildings and walls as her canvas. I saw her work at the GOMA last year and was blown away by it.

Wassily Kandinsky has always inspired me. I love his use of colour and forms.

I have been thinking of my Concept for my produce artwork class a lot. Trying to get an idea. I want it to be personal to me. In my painting class our next set of paintings has to be based on personal imagery. So i can have them linking in some way. Also in drawing i have been playing with maps and drawing over them. I am liking it. I have been using maps of where i have lived before, so it becomes personal to me. So I am still not sure where it will be going, but hopefully soon i will have some direction.

Jan Senbergs

I found the artist Jan Senbergs in a book from the library "studio: Australian painter on the nature of creating"

I like the perspective he uses and I really like the picture below "Wollongong to Port Kenbla" I would love to do a painting like that one day.

This is some development of my painting for tafe. The task is to produce imagery based on current media issues. We have 6 weeks to do 3 paintings. We are coming into week 4 of the project. I am confident I will get it done in time.

Alexis Rockman

Here is some pictures of Alexis Rockman artwork. He is an American artist that I recently found when researching artists for my painting concept. I like the way he works with paint.

My concept for painting is global warming and pollution on the earth. Similar to some of what Alexis Rockman's work is based on.

City Concept

Looking at all my paintings I am noticing some connections. At the moment I like to paint city scenes (mostly Brisbane) and I am also drawn to lots of colour. I think I will continue with the city concept. But I would like to develop it more give it more depth and meaning to me. I am not quite sure why I am drawn to the concept of the city. I have only been living in the city for about a year and a half. I grew up sort of in the country and it was always a big deal to me when we came to the city. I am drawn to the shapes and structure of the building. The way they are so close together is fun to draw and paint.
